Bonnie Wright's new label, Henceforth Records is off to a good start with a couple of thrilling releases.
First time I'd encountered the work of west-coast saxophonist Marco Eneidi [now living in Austria] was through his involvement in Glenn Spearman's Creative Music Orchestra [which was released by Music & Arts label about a decade ago]. Sure, he appeared with Glenn Spearman's ensembles before, as well as being a full-time member of the Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble as well as playing with Bill Dixon on occasion [check out "Thoughts"] and William Parker's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra [excellent "Flowers Grow in My Room" comes to mind], but albums under his own name were sparse and difficult to come by. With their initial release, Henceforth Records is now making up for lost time. Sound on Survival is a trio that features Eneidi on saxophones, Lisle Ellis on bass and percussionist Peter Valsamis. These are all live recordings from a US tour that took place a couple of years ago. The best thing about the recording is the four pieces [ranging from 9 minutes to just over 40 minutes] are drawn out improvisations. Each of the players is permitted ample room to stretch out and show off their plentiful skills. Eneidi's alto blows may be reminiscent of Jimmy Lyons [whom he studied under] but he's been stubborn to tread his own path. Though there are plenty of stop-and-go, quickly executed, furiously penned playing, Eneidi can slow down the session at will as well. I can't think of a better bassist than Lisle Ellis. His fat, juicy plucking gets the entire trio worked up in a frenzy. It's a good thing percussionist Peter Valsamis doesn't take the easy way out and simply "accompany" the others. Rather, he's stringent and outright stubborn in resisting the trend to play along. Though at times I found his attention to cymbals to be overwhelming, there's enough variety in his craft for the fussiest of improvised music fans. The trio is exuberant at every turn and the opening of new ideas happens with enough frequency to make the listening experience an enjoyable one. Exhausting and bone-sweating improvisation of the highest calibre.
"Baggerboot" features a trio of two musicians from Wuppertal, Germany - violinist and viola player Gunda Gottschalk and accordion player Ute Völker - along with Belgian bassist Peter Jacquemyn [who is also a member of the famous WIM]. Unusual choice of instrumentation for a jazz improvisation ensemble, but then again, this is not really jazz. It somehow straddles the boundaries and moves freely between improvisation and new music. In fact, new music is the moniker I would stick on the trio. Many of the recent work by members of the trio can be heard on various releases on Free Elephant label, which incidentally is run by Gottschalk. From a musical perspective, the trio doesn't really probe any new frontiers. This sort of comprovised [partially composed and mostly improvised music] has been done numerous times before. What's interesting here is all three players are truly interested in the texture of the sounds. How will the sounds appear as Gottschalk scrapes a mean pattern across her violin, while accordionist Völker weaves waves of chaotic noise, all the while Jacquemyn pounds his bass into submission with brutal force. Most interesting passage comes in "Cascade III", where a moody, drone passage is introduced. Highly energetic, the sounds are weaved in a fashion that makes the sum of the parts more interesting than individual ingredients.
