MC RAI
Raivolution

[Embarka Records, www.embarkarecords.com]

When you mention the word rai to most people, the name that first comes to mind is that of Cheb Khaled. Truth be told, rai is rich with new talent and bursting at the seams, waiting for your thirsty ears. Tunisian-born, San Francisco-based MC Rai is one such artist. This groove-mister takes rai, applies a healthy dose of mid-tempo grooves and applies his naturally lively vocals to make the mix sound alive and full of pizzazz. It's not crucial to mention that all vocals are sung in Arabic [I don't think I would enjoy a bastardized form of Rai anyhow]. What's important is this young vocalist is turning heads by sticking to his sources. This isn't bastardized music. Nothing artificial is thrown in. Pure emotions rule the dance floor as you spin your body round and round again in pure orgasmic frenzy. When d'n'b and funky trumpets are added to the mix, the songs simply shout at you. When the pace changes, as it does on "Maktoubi", the music starts to simmer slowly and has a lovely soulful quality to it. MC Rai's voice possesses this glowing eternal flame that keeps the groove firmly in tact. Whatever corner of the world you may come from, "Raivolution" is a stunning debut.
