Born in 2002 out of the love of sound recording engineer Riccardo Farnea, Galatina Records is actually an off-shoot of Ensemble Laboratorio Novamusica based in Venice, Italy.  Its main aim is to record this Italian new music ensemble in all of its permutations.
Sponsored by European Association for Jewish Culture, "Alphabet Music" is a brave journey into the past.  Title piece came about when Giovanni Mancuso studied "Sefer Yetzirah" - one of the most crucial texts in Jewish mysticism.  Author tried to approach the piece through the stance of importance of Hebrew alphabet as an inspiration for his art.  The piece itself is a fourteen minute jaunt through an adventurous piece written for flute, saxophone, violin, bass, theremin, and two pianos [one of these is prepared].  Mostly stop-and-go directive motions are present through the piece.  A bit jerky at the start, by the end individual instruments seems to find their respective parts and everything falls into place.  "Aleph Beth Gymel" is a piece from 1997 written specifically for soprano sax.  Its wielding, pleasant tone sets the pace for the last five pieces on the CD, which are pure vocal tracks accompanied by the ensemble.  Raiz who sings these parts has a tenderly mournful voice.  This is a voice of someone who's been beaten but not defeated.  Possessed by beauty and purpose, this is an especially rich effort. Translating from Italian as "Dialectic Jam to the Mind" ["Compressione Dialettica alla Mente"], the album is a compressed ideal presentation of the ensemble's musical ideas.
Featuring moving trumpet blasts from Ilich Fenzi, gusting trombone bits from Umberto De Nigris, the piece revels in heavily transcribed score, while crossing the line over to improvisational ideals.  Acting as a conductor, Giovanni Mancuso plays thick clusters on the piano one minute, while providing trickling glissando movements the next.  Viola played sparingly by Piergabriele Mancuso and thick layers of Andrea Carlon's bass have wickedly innovative duel passages throughout the piece.  Whole comes out sounding like a new music ensemble trying to morph its way into an improvisational group.  Thick with ideas, with room to grow, "Compressione Dialettica alla Mente" leaves the listener begging for more.
Envisioned as an imaginary soundtrack to a non-existent movie, "Black Film" is Giovanni Mancuso's tribute to the long-gone era of black & white cinema.  Composed in 2005, it features his Laboratoria Novamusica ensemble, which are heard at the height of their creative prowess.  Featuring thirty brief pieces, the piece itself is a concoction of the more obvious written parts with passages that sound like they're thrown over to improvisation.  Especially satisfying are brazen trumpet calls courtesy of Ilich Fenzi along with trombone slurs from Umbert de Nigris.  When the ensemble blasts into a furious crescendo, there's just no stopping them.  From the soft spoken percussion work through to the occasional voices heard throughout the piece, Mancuso tries his best at throwing a genuine movie-like atmosphere at the listeners.  Most pleasing are Mancuso's heavy-handed piano passages.  With a force of an elephant, he stomps on the keys, while his ensemble returns the challenge in turn.  The only drawback is structurally, the record is a bit too cut'n'paste.  It nearly feels like someone took a fine knife and cut certain passages out on purpose.  Other than that, this is another fine effort from Italian master of modern composition.
