EXTRA GOLDEN
OK-Oyot System

It's a good thing it's only May as I just found the perfect album for the summer of 2006.  "OK-Oyot System" is a little jewel that hopefully will not fall between the cracks.  Mixing up a rich concoction of world music and rock flavours, it steers clear of rooting for one side or another.  This isn't bastardized music by any sense of the word.  A true collaboration between member of two bands - Kenyan Orchestra Extra Solar Africa represented by Otieno Jagwasi and Onyango Wuod Omari and American rock band Golden, represented by Alex Minoff and Ian Eagleson.  A deliberate meeting of cultures came about as Eagleson was completing his doctoral research on Kenyan music.  Actual title "Ok-Oyot System" comes from the Luo phrase "ok ovot", meaning "it's not easy".  Many Luo benga bands in Kenya use this phrase to articulate the hardships in their lives.  Life is so brutal in fact that vocalist/guitarist Otieno Jagwasi passed away in May 2005 due to liver failure and HIV complications.  Not to single anyone out on the session but Otieno's sweet, tender vocals [reminiscent of Fela Kuti's slower jams] along with his bluesy guitar playing are what make the session.  His friend Onyango Wuod Omari who provides an earth-shattering, rock-steady percussion throughout the record is a true master of his game.  You simply know the rhythms will come out feeling just right - not too intense, but not too lazy either.  Minoff's guitar playing is somewhat less distinctive as is Eagleson's bass playing, which is just fine.  However, when the band jams, there's no stopping them.  Like a more uplifting Ali Farka Toure, "It's Not Easy" features a killer guitar rhythm and some sultry vocals from Alex and Ian.  Most successful "rock" piece turns out to be "Tussin and Fightin'" - a gently groove-oriented piece with a steady rhythm.  Interplay between both guitarists is rich as is the caressing vocals from Otieno.  The record stands as a testament to that musician - one whose powers were discovered only after the success.
