JUANA MOLINA
Son

[Domino Records, www.dominorecordco.com]

Do you need to speak a foreign language to feel overpowering emotional force of Juana Molina's latest release?  I don't speak a word of Spanish [except for the single words I picked up from years of being forced to watch "Dora the Explorer"] but still, I was immediately moved by this record.  There is something in Juana's vocal chords that spells magic, beauty, uniqueness and a sense of adventure.  The woman who was once one of Argentina's most popular TV personalities/comedians is proving once again that her move into song writing has not been for naught.  Intimacy of the record is overpowering.  Basically, this is in-your-face music - something to really sink all of your senses into.  Listening to this album for the last few weeks, I'd come to a conclusion that Juana needs to wear her feelings right on her sleeve.  What better of paying homage to Robert Wyatt's "Robert is Stranger Than Ruth" period than to sing an unforgettable "Un Beso Llega".  Her chirpy, drowsy, animal-like vocals [you could swear she was a cat here] are something that I'd not heard too many vocalists attempt.  Ultimately, this is Juana, her guitar and a bunch of samplers, synths and folk-induced electronics.  The found sounds on the record - crickets?  dogs?  cats? - make the whole feel almost like a field recording taped near a humid swamp.  Intimate setting is stark as the vocalist leads us through various tales of her personal endeavour [or maybe they're about other people's lives?].  On "Malherido" which features heavily treated and overdubbed vocals, she impersonates an owl - delicately ooo-ooo-ing listeners into her night vision world.  In other places - such as on the bare-boned "Elena" - her voice sounds akin to that of Heidi Berry's tender whispers.  The fact that lyrics are only printed in Spanish stamps the record with an enigma [what exactly is Juana so passionate about?].  Wrapped in an organic sweater made out of the finest hemp, "Son" is not something you only listen to.  It's something you actually wear.
