FUMIO YASUDA
Las Vegas Rhapsody - The Night They Invented Champagne

[Winter & Winter, www.winterandwinter.com]

Considering Stefan Winter's label has covered all parts of the globe - China, Cuba, Mexico, Italy - it's not much of a surprise then that the next stop on its musical journey should happen to be Las Vegas.  The album I hold in my hands [as usual, beautifully crafted to resemble a hard-bound book] is an odd little entity.  Japanese composer Fumio Yasuda decided to orchestrate some of the more famous stage numbers specifically for American-based, German-born Theo Bleckmann.  Now, picture this, a sultry vocalist trying to interpret the great American songbook - Rodgers & Hammerstein, Porter, Kern, Warren - being accompanied by a large orchestra [Kammerorchester Basel under the direction of Bernd Ruf].  The only original piece on the record is the grand opening number [and the epilogue] "Las Vergas Rhapsody".  Bleckmann's voice takes some getting used to.  Picture a more subtle Pet Shop Boys interpreting the classics [they've tried it on a couple of occasions to some good effect] with a pianist and an orchestra and you're about half-way there.  Being a huge fan of "The Sound of Music", one of my favourite numbers happens to be "My Favorite Things", though I find Bleckmann's interpretation rather lukewarm to say the least.  If he'd been able to infuse it with half the energy Julie Andrews did in the movie, this take would have ended up being a winner.  In fact, Bleckmann is much better suited at singing ballads.  His take of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is stunning and even spine-tingling at moments.  A true tear-jerker if I'd ever heard one.  From a pure musical perspective, orchestra rises to the occasion whenever that is called for.  Mixed record at best though I get a sense this may really be a hit with an older crowd [with no offence to anyone collecting their old age pension].  If Bleckmann could truly project what these original pieces were all about, we'd all be richer for it.
