PETER WRIGHT
Pariahs Sing Om

[Last Visible Dog Records, www.lastvisibledog.com]

Mysterious hobbit, Peter Wright has seen a good deal of interest expressed in his work over the last couple of years.  First came a re-issue of "Distant Bombs" on Last Visible Dog and now the same label decided to go for broke and re-issue two complete albums - "Pariahs Sing Om" and "Catch a Spear as it Flies" along with a ton of unreleased tracks under the name "Pariahs Sing Om [Collected Drone Poems 2000 - 2003]".  Drone-miester by trade, Wright [who runs the now dormant Apoplexy label] specializes in working with subtle noises that are possessed with heavy drone qualities.  Landscapes he produces with his guitar, effects and his laptop are mesmerizing, scary and welcoming at once.  There's a sense of slow introspection prevalent on all three discs of music at hand.  First disc features a stillness formed out of shimmering guitars.  As the waves of background stillness dissipate, the clouds lift to reveal electric guitar being strummed ever so slowly.  Even ocean waves make it into the mix.  I especially love the way Wright holds onto certain notes and keeps them hanging in mid air - suspended, naked and vulnerable.  Like falling ocean waves cresting their way to untimely death at the sea shore, these sounds have that same potent energy.  Disc two is more minimal.  This time around, his approach is even more textural, more obtuse.  Wah-wahs of the guitar complement the effects and the mood is overwhelmingly cerebral.  The closing 25 minute piece, "The Bride Stripped Bare (again)" establishes a tender ear-stirring hum that keeps on flowing in the same direction.  Along with a pulsing rhythm that's hidden behind the hum [or maybe I'm just imagining a rhythm where none exists?], there is an understated coil-like drone that simply goes on and on and on, until finally, accompanied by minute tinkling and metal rain sound, withers and dies a natural death.  Final disc yields the most surprises.  Somewhere in the middle of the aural excursion, we find Wright is able to throw a couple of surprising curve balls our way.  In the midst of the heavily processed drones, there are a number of disturbing, gut-wrenching noise-bursts.  It's here we discover this guy can take us for a ride and shoot our perceptions right through the head.  Don't get me wrong, the drones are still here in all their metallic glory.  Some are organic, while others feel oddly alien and removed from any real sense or source.  When all comes to a close, I tend to sit there with my mouth gaping wide open, and think of Casey Kasem's words of wisdom, who once said [off the record - though the tape luckily enough ended up being published] "is this fucking ponderous man...ponderous, fucking ponderous!"
