ROY NATHANSON
Sotto Voce

Last time I encountered Roy Nathanson was in his Jazz Passenger vehicle during early 90's as they scrolled through town. It was during a gig they were doing with Deborah Harry at a local gay club that I realized these are not quite the same Jazz Passengers I had seen mature from early days. They seemed to be only going through the motions. Sadly, that quirky spark was missing. While the band seemed to have fallen off the face of the earth around the late 90's, I often wondered what had happened to Roy Nathanson, one of their founders [Curtis Fowlkes being the other co-founder]. From my recollection this is only the second album to grace Nathanson's name in the headlights [the other by Roy Nathanson's Quartet "Little Fred" released by Crepescule is sadly out of print]. All the more reason to rejoice when I found this CD in my mailbox. So, the guy's still around cracking away at it!I could hardly wait until I popped the CD into the player. All right, so this is not the usual Nathanson fare. Gone are the instrumentals, which are now replaced by vocal tracks, but then again, that's the whole purpose of this CD - to show the breath and depth of the human voice. First of, every member of the quintet is also listed as a vocalist, which is a key statement with this ensemble. Just how whacked out is this album?Well, for starters, you've got human beat box Napoleon Maddox thumping his way through "By The Page", where everyone in unison sings in a barbershop choir kind or way "my father paid me to read five cents a page". Their take on "Sunny" is unforgettable. Just as Nathanson is wailing a soprano solo, Curtis Fowlkes is providing those great rhythmic farting trombone gasps, while Napoleon Maddox is squelching the part of the missing percussionist. In fact, if I could give kudos to one member of the quintet, it would definitely be Maddox for sheer stamina and ways of execution. The rest of the band delivers some moving moments. From the balladeering on "Sunrise, Sunset" [which comes complete with some killer solos from both Nathanson and Fowlkes] to the lovely violin tid-bits from Sam Bardfeld on "It's Allright", it's all good. I'll give this one 11 out of 10 stars and make a brief note as a surprise comeback of the year and a flawless record to boot!
