Other than Edward Vesala, Finnish jazz musicians have more or less by-passed my ears. This is about to change with the release of a "Jazz from FINland 2005" sampler that I'm now holding in my hands. Obviously, a sampler representing any country's musical map will feature not necessarily the most gifted musicians, but those that can sell the product. This is why, we have mainstream, straight-ahead trumpet blowing of Mikko Pettinen on MP4's "The Hedgehog" and ECM-ish playing from Ilmiliekki Quartet on "March of the Alpha Males" [though percussionist Jaska Lukkarinen does stretch out somewhat]. Though for the most part, the album features straight ahead fare, there are some real stand outs here. Tenor player Juhani Aaltonen plays a very soulful ballad "Serenity" together with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille. Accordion player Kimmo Pohjonen does a wonderful, eerie and innovative duo piece with percussionist Eric Echampard. Even Eero Ojanen's Tayloresque percussive piano playing on "End of the Beginning" is absolutely stunning and convincing at once. There's so much interesting stuff to discover in the jazz players from Finland and this is one good place to start that journey.
> From Finland, we move to Africa, where so many jazz musicians were born and
others have found endless inspiration. "Natural Jazz" actually tracks the development of jazz in South Africa and America simultaneously. From the sweetly tender duet of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong "They Can't Take That Away From Me" to Nina Simone's ultimatum on "Love Me or Leave Me" to Billy Holiday's rough-edged "I Get a Kick Out of You", the compilation is fine as an glimpse at the American side of things. For the South African side, we have the township vibe of Jazz Dazzlers on "Diepkloof Ekhaya", the laid back grooves of Dorothy Masuka and her rendition of "Ufikizolo" and Thomas Mabiletsa's lively "Zulu Piano Medley No1 Part 1". Overall, it's a solid compilation, taking us through the years of South African and American jazz development. Though, I'm not sure what Astrud Gilberto or Antonio Carlos Jobim are doing here?Wouldn't they fit in more on a Brazilian jazz compilation with a bosa nova theme?
