PIERRE FAVRE / YANG JING
Two in One

[Intakt Records, www.intaktrec.ch]

Swiss percussionist Pierre Favre has played duet dates with a number of great musicians. From the stellar pianist Irene Schweizer, percussionists Andrea Centazzo and Fredy Studer, flautist Jioí Stivín, he's covered a wide gamut of musical territory. Chinese pipa player Yang Jing is someone Favre has recorded with previously and with this CD he returns to mine some new ground. I have recollections of listening to some fine pipa playing on several Radio France CDs over the years, but then my interests shifted elsewhere. I'm glad someone is turning the spotlight back again. Favre is known for his exquisite use of space. Simply put, he uses the acoustics as much as possible. Whether it's striking the tom lightly or pounding on the hi-hat or just caressing the skin, almost like an explorer of a new land, he wonders at the newness of his drum set with great detail. For those who haven't seen one, pipa is a beautiful looking upright string instrument. Jing is rather careful in treading her way across the strings. It's almost as if she developed a pensive methodology of improvisation. Sure, there's some fine improvised passages - where the duo intermingles in a universal language of their own - but too many times, I get an impression, they're just too careful about the possibilities of their instruments. Listen to them both on "Raining Day", as Jing and Favre with great subtlety appropriate an oncoming rainstorm. Favre likens the thunderstorm with some brush strokes, while Jing plays some swirling and dithering passages. There are a few dramatic passages that are quite descent in "The Theatre Evening" but as I listen to the CD for actual "highlights", I can't decide whether the duo needs to relax in front of each other or whether they have too much respect for each other's craft to simply let their hair loose. Either that, or perhaps these two intentionally strived for an intimate meeting of the minds, rather than something stormy and flat-out wild. Whatever the case, "Two in One" is a good album that sees the duo continuing on the right path of mutual communication.
