OMARA PORTUONDO
Sentimiento

[Escondida, www.escondidamusic.com]

Omara Portuondo was a key player in Buena Vista Social Club that broke new records for Cuban music but more importantly, turned the spotlight to Cuban jazz after years of ignorance and utter darkness. Not a greatest hits package per se, "Sentimiento" nonetheless presents fifteen tracks taken from Portuondo's illustrious career. Recorded between 1973 and 1996, each one is unique in giving the listener at least a little glimpse into her state of mind, her musical interests and passion for her work. Portuondo's career began long before 1973 of course. In 1945, she was chosen to be a dancer in Tropicana nightclub in Havana. At the end of the 40's, she began to sing and formed Cuarteto Las D'Aida, together with her sister Haydeé, Elana Burke and Moriama Secada. The ensemble toured the US quite often, until the 60's, when a ban was imposed by the American government. While her sister defected, Omara stayed behind and sang quite often in the sugar fields, during the peak of Castro's revolution. She was also given an opportunity to tour Eastern Europe and some Asian countries. "Buena Vista Social Club" was really the second coming for Portuondo, as this time around, the curtain was wide opened for the entire world to hear this woman's special voice. What a voice it is!Each and every track on this compilation is so drenched in feeling and overflowing in passion. From the desperation of "Verdad Amarga", through to utter sadness of "Toda Una Vida" to the poignancy of "Y Mucho Mas"; everything she touches turns to gold. Varying styles of music are dabbled in, from the sweet bosa nova, big band jazz, rumbas and boleros are all heard aplenty. One of my favourite tracks is "Guitarra en Son Mayor", where every single possible style seems to be touched on - from the sing-along bosa nova chorus through to the heavy brass section and big-band jazz styling and a blend of African and Latin percussion. Early on in her musical career, she worked with Nat King Cole and her immediate love for jazz shines through and through. Though Portuondo has already left a vital musical legacy, I still wish her good health and many more albums that will enrich our ears and hearts.
