TIZIANO TONONI & THE ORNETTIANS
Peace Warriors - Volume One

[Black Saint, www.blacksaint.com]

Italian percussionist Tiziano Tononi was pretty much self taught in various rock groups, until late 70's, when he met Andrew Cyrillle. He studied with Cyrille for a while, and then he moved on to study with David Lee Searcy as well as drummer Bob Moses. Back in 1981, he co-founded Nexus, a group that is going strong to this very day. He has also been an important piece of the Italian Instabile Orchestra. Having paid tributes to Coltrane and Roland Kirk, the next logical figure among the heap of jazz giants was Ornette Coleman. Now, you've got to have mucho balls to cover Ornette. You can't really pay tribute to the whole breadth of Ornette's catalogue. If you want to cover Ornette, you've got to concentrate on a particular phase of his rich musical tapestry in order for the record to sound plausible. Tononi has thrown caution to the wind and chose not to concentrate on any particular time frame [though much of Coleman's 50's and 60's writing is here]. We get gems such as "Happy House" [here done as a fairly straight-ahead interpretation, save for a scraping violin that makes a brief appearance], "The Empty Foxhole" [done as a meditative piece, with some nice two bass solos], and the ever dependable, melancholy take of "Sadness". What works best on this record is the tenor [Daniele Cavallanti] and alto [Achille Succi] attack that is persistent throughout. Watch them fly way up to the sky on "A Girl Named Rainbow / School Work". The two bass team [Giovanni Maier and Piero Leveratto] along with violinist Emanuele Parrini get downright nasty on extended solos halfway through "Peace Warriors / Africa is the Mirror of all Colours". Best of all is that Tononi never intercepts any of his sideman, nor does he pound the skins solely to show strength. The drive in Tononi's interpretations is utter persistence. There is a constant fire that is lit under each player's ass to ensure everyone gives their absolute maximum. I can hear sweat dripping onto everyone's instruments on each and every piece. The conviction to keep Coleman's music fresh and updated is right on the page. While I feel a little bit hungry at the end of the CD's 80 minutes, good news is Tononi is already working on the second instalment of Coleman's pieces.
