One Second Bridge is a new duo composed of Vicente Garcia Landa from Mexico and Matias Bieniaszewski from Argentina. Both play a mix of guitars, computers and even sing in odd places. Their debut is full of lush melodies, unspoken sad tales and an affinity for the more relaxing side of the musical spectrum. This sort of thing has been done before - name any ambient act that uses "real" instrumentation and you'll get the drift - but still, the duo has a lot to offer. From the grand piano solo of "Un Minuto", to the lazy-dazed vocals surrounded by glitchy effects and guitars on "Everywhere" to the haunting drowsy melody of "Ventana", the album takes the listener for an aural journey into the softer side, where the grass is always greener. As an afterthought, I wish the duo expanded their repertoire beyond the 38 minute album length. Just as the music really starts to grab you, the album fades to black, which is rather unfortunate.
Martin Juhls or Marsen Jules - whichever moniker you choose - has just released his second solo album for Berlin's City Centre Offices imprint. As much as I hate to throw a reference without a care, it's nonetheless refreshing to hear someone so freely quoting the likes of Brian Eno or Michael Brook. No matter what machinery he uses throughout the album, the atmosphere is spotlessly calm. In that I mean, there's very little movement and when such occurs, it's dreadfully slow and morosely executed. Like a lifeless statue or a wilting leaf falling from a tree in the dead of fall, the music simply sits there and waits for action to happen. Vibraphone fragments on the first track are mind-boggling in their execution. Likewise, harp sections on "Gueule de Loup" and "Coquelicot" are delicately strung, almost like some sort of an ethereal, majestic hymn. Little bits of percussive sounds make it into the mix along with elongated passages of humbling, flow-through beauty. Whether you take this record for your first or your hundredth spin, it's always an exhilarating, albeit a quiet experience.
