JOHN PEEL AND SHEILA
The Pig's Big 78s - A Beginner's Guide

[Trikont, www.trikont.de]

When John Peel passed away late last year, the first thing that struck just about everyone who listened to his show was just how much the music world would miss. Here was a man who introduced so much important new music to a wider audience, who forced people take notice and who truly enjoyed all forms of music. Second question that was on the tip of most people's tongues was what would happen to Peel's enormous collection of music. For starters, we now get an introduction to Peel's hefty collection of 78s. Compiled by John Peel and his wife Sheila, some of these songs were played throughout Peel's programmes and were in fact introduced by Sheila herself. You've got to love a collection that features such obscure numbers as Ronnie Ronalde's "The Yodeling Whistler", dating back to 1951. Here was a man who wasn't ashamed to feature huge amounts of whistling and yodeling within the same song. Who needs the Trump family when you've got Ronnie! The blues of Sonny Terry [circa 1949] on "Riff and Harmonica Jump" sound astoundingly moving, while Ray Martin & His Orchestra's classic "Blue Tango" from two years later doesn't sound a bit out of place either. The stomping of clarinettist George Lewis & His New Orleans Music on "Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula" is one mother of a jazz piece. Full of Dixieland and good romping flavours, the piece takes us back in time to early 1900's New Orleans when the birth of jazz spelled out a major musical revolution. Twenty three numbers in total, with a brief introduction from Sheila at the beginning, this record is full of songs long left by the wayside of society on a format that has not been manufactured for ages. "The Pig's Big 78s" serves as a glorious momentum of music from the past to the man that gave us so much essential music of the future.
