DEEP BLUE ORGAN TRIO
Goin' To Town - Live at the Green Mill CD / DVD

[Delmark, www.delmark.com]

If Chicago is still the capital of the blues, then surely Deep Blue Organ Trio has to be one of its premier proponents. For the last three years, they've populated the Green Mill in the heart of the Windy City for a weekly jam session. The trio's smooth sound is reflected in this live session. On disc or DVD, their sound is warm, articulate and most of all smooth as butter. Guitarist Bobby Broom has a knack for turning his snapping guitar lines into moody rollicking self-contained outbursts. Not unlike a more refined, much smoother James Blood Ulmer on downers, Broom nonetheless gives us the goods in all their shiny rhythmic glory. Percussionist Greg Rockingham rocks the house, albeit in a tender fashion, always remembering there are two other members he's sharing the stage with. In fact, oftentimes I wish he broke out of his mould and actually did something more out of the ordinary that would shake the trio up. It's the fat B3 organ sounds procured by Chris Foreman that make the session. One minute he's all butter - playing it smooth as most blues outfits would - while the next he gets into maddening duos with Broom. Check out "The Way You Look Tonight" to get a little taste of the many faces of Foreman. While he starts off innocently enough by playing a tender rhythm section, near the end of the piece, he's holding musical hands with the guitarist who finds a way to intertwine his playing beside the organ. What a moving picture this is. Foreman has to be seen. In fact, the organ solos on the DVD sound twice as intense as those presented on the CD. This guy has fire under his ass. He's one of these full-body organ players, using every muscle to make the sound come alive. Surprise musical moment arrives right at the end, with the Trio's cover of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Can't Hide Love". Wickedly underhanded in its delivery, this is the piece from the classic disco repertoire I'm glad is now receiving a second chance in a new blues-soul light of its own. While almost too tender in moments, this session [whether on DVD or in its original audio CD format] still has a lot of memorable musical highlights to pay attention to.
