IRENE SCHWEIZER
First Choice - Piano Solo KKL Luzern

[Intakt Records, www.intaktrec.ch]

On the occasion of what I assume was her 65th birthday, Irčne Schweizer was invited to play the prestigious Cultural and Congress Centre in Lucerne, Switzerland. A momentous occasion indeed, seeing how this 1500 people room is considered to be one of the best classical music concert halls in that mountainous country. With many of the top political and art figures from Switzerland on hand, Schweizer was asked to play a solo recital. Perhaps a daunting task, if you take into consideration that a number of people had frayed nerves prior to their performances at this very space. She started off her presentation with the night's centrepiece. Twenty minute long "First Choice" is a carefully concocted piece de resistance that offers her forty years or so of improvising magic in a nutshell. From the start, hard hitting of the ivory, to the softest touches of the keys, all the way through to the dance-like movements that have repeating motifs, Schweizer never underestimates the power of variety. If the listener gets bores with sameness, let's surprise them with something they weren't ready for. And so it goes with this piece and onto the next one, the aptly titled "Into the Hall of Fame", where the pianist is playing maddening movements of varying speeds and chords. Sure, it's easy to bring up Cecil Taylor at this moment in time [as many have in the past] but that would simply be a cop out. Where as Taylor thinks of the keys as percussive tools, Schweizer has a vested interest in the melodic aspect of the playing. Check out her tribute to her favourite piano figure, Thelonious Monk [someone she has covered on numerous occasions] on "Oska T.". Full of melodic clarity, the piece is a confident stab at one of the greatest jazz composers of the last century. For a change of pace, on "Scratching at the KKL", she gets deep inside the piano and wildly rasps on the strings, and even makes percussive sounds inside the instrument, all of which makes for an remarkable contrast. No encore, just the well deserved rampant bout of applause ends the nearly hour long program. Bravo!
