GARDEN
Round & Round

[Static Caravan, www.staticcaravan.org]

Garden's leader is one supposedly recluse by the name of Simon Lord. Former leader of a pop outfit Simian, he is a country boy at heart. Admiring folk singers of days gone by - Nick Drake, Richard Thompson - and those of the present - Richard Youngs - he dives head down into deep waters and explores the rapid popularity of folk music among the pop crowd. Simon says "I'm a country boy at heart and always used to write songs out in fields, up hills and in back gardens. I grew up in the middle of nowhere and being out in the countryside has always been an inspiration for my music. In the same way rappers talk about the streets, I'm down with the greenery."
Colour the album green and the music downright homey. Though there are obvious influences from the prog rock scene, Krautrock, folk and ambient music, he manages to hold onto his own ideal and shine through. When I listen to his musical creation, pictures pop up in my head. Little abnormalities from middle ages, when Robin Hood reigned in Sherwood, when men rode in full armour on their horses and women tended in the fields. I get glimpses of Tiny Tim seducing an ugly woman - sorry that was a nightmare! To say this music has a homey feeling would be an obvious disservice. Yes, it is homey in its exact tenderness, in the way your lover caresses your back and nibbles on your years, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Lord has a caressing quality about his voice - something rarely heard nowadays. The guitars are tender and moving, while the rhythm section sounds rather loose and free. Some of these pieces remind me of early days of Microdisney, before Cathal Coughlan was still a gent, before he learned how to howl with bile at everyone and everything in sight. Around again, I get visions of purple fairies that float on water and tell me the strangest bedtime stories. Mine is a world filled with love in a Garden. Extremely limited to a pressing of 600 copies, "Round & Round" is sure to please everyone who enjoys basking their lazy afternoons in the summer sun.
