ANLA COURTIS
Tape Works

[Pogus, www.pogus.com]

Argentinean Anla Courtis has loved the sound of tape for the longest time. On previous albums, he used tape hiss as a sound source to make up a sound collage of sorts. On "Tape Works" a similar concept is brought forward. Produced between 1991 and 1998, the collection is a glimpse into the mind of this tape head. Courtis admits he didn't get a computer until 1999, which is why tape was his main sound source for so many years. From discarded reel-to-reel tapes, water sounds, analog tapes, Micromoog synth, and processed tapes, the sounds are as eerie as some of its sources. "Jarabe De Llanura" from 1996 features an array of dissonant and trickling water, processed by distortion pedals of an electric guitar set. What sounds like water at first, by the end of the piece begins to resemble a weirdly concocted guitar solo. The processing on "Respire Un Cordero" uses discarded reel-to-reel tapes that feature an ad for clothes. The female vocal is re-shaped in such a way as to make for echo-chamber of sorts and a play on words to boot [the phrase was re-done to sound like "Changuito clothes you from the very moment you open your little eyes"]. Stand out piece is the brief, 3 minute Micromoog analog synth experiment called "Invisible Clown Sonata". While Courtis envisioned circus music from an invisible galaxy, I hear a re-doing of Sun Ra's "My Brother The Wind, Vol. 2" moog artistry. Just as much as Sonny was breaking new ground with his moog improvisations, Courtis twenty years later follows the same space path to enlightenment. Tape manipulations on the longish "Encias de Viento" are made up of a short guitar loop with digital delay that was capable of one-second sampling. Throughout the sixteen minute length, the piece is morphed time and again into an object of dire beautiful noise. I can even pictures a giant snoring in one of those kids cartoons. Direct and brutally honest to point of extremes, Anla Courtis' work with various sorts of tape is something worth shouting about.
