CLARK
Boddy Riddle

[Warp, www.warprecords.com]

Just after lunch, you need something that takes you away from the drudgery that is your day. You look through your music collection and you find "Body Riddle". You look at the artist. Clark. Hmmm…doesn't ring any bells in my head. Then you slip the CD into the player and you're blown by this guy's eclectic energy. The chugga-chugga, choo-choo rhythm techniques [I've been watching a lot of "Thomas The Train" lately, I admit!] Christopher Clark employs are tasty full meals in themselves. When he's pounding the skins and establishing a fat beat on "Vengeance Drools", it sounds as if this is an actual live band. Then, just a few minutes away, the piece disintegrates into an ambient freeze zone, where crystal drops flow about and strange aural fixation is the order of the day. "Night Knuckles" is another odd piece that features what resembles bells played in successive order. This is augmented by just the perfect mix of laptop electronica that saves the day. Many of the pieces have an orchestral feel to them. "Ted" is pure blasting live number that could be played by a live band or could be recreated without a hitch on a laptop, given the right conditions are present. The tweaking of the knobs in the studio for this effort was obviously done by someone in love with the high twitch sound; someone who loves overload on the treble and someone who likes things on the rough side of the production spectrum. It's the never ending variety - live electronica, slimy beats, off-kilter d'n'b, echoes of dub - that turn my knob the most. Without having to rant about left and right about the superiority of Clark's full length, I'll say one thing - it's a blast out of nowhere. Stop at nothing and do whatever it takes to get your copy now. I wonder what Clark is like in front of a raving crowd.
