FLYING CANYON
Flying Canyon

[Soft Abuse, www.softabuse.com]

Like a thundering crow attacking you from the sky above, Californian trio Flying Canyon make it onto the scene with a mournful, though a pleasantly surprisingly coherent debut eponomously titled full length. Vocalist / guitarist Cayce Lindner has that untouchable smirk and sad tone in his voice as he sings these songs. Rhythm section made up of Glenn Donaldson and bassist Shayde Sartin make up an interesting back-up ensemble that actually acts as the front. The album's opening riffs on "In The Reflection" remind me more of Butthole Surfers on downers than anything folk-like these guys are trumped up to be. Lindner's vocals are rough and steaming under the pressure of dire depression. It's as if he's taken something and can't get excited about anything at all. As we move deeper inside the record, "Down to Summer" is even more depressing than the opening track and things just don't look too optimistic from this point on. By the time we get to "Gibralter May Fall", the trio settles comfortably into the folk-trip, accepting this as their mission in life. Distant chords echo in your head as the band assembles a sturdy ground on which future folk legends will do or die. The finest moments are those that resemble a sort of a freak-alternate mushroom-induced reality. Everything here is ripe with emotion and the trio never hides their true feelings about a topic at hand. As "This Can't Be My Home" rolls around, you realize these guys are sad musicians, who happen to enjoy an "other" way of looking at things and come to the table with large quantities of Prozac. Whatever makes you happy or sad. If you thought Nick Drake or Andy Bey were sad, you haven't experienced Flying Canyon yet. Perfect rain listening music which is guaranteed to squeeze some tears out from your eyes.
