RAFAEL TORAL
Space

[Staubgold, www.staubgold.com]

Following a fifteen year stint with guitar and electronics, Portuguese sound-man Rafael Toral makes a break with a past and starts something new. "Space" is his a grand-opening of a multi-release "Space Program" that will encompass over ten solo releases in the next few years. Blueprint for the new series of records came from jazz [!]. The freedom and the structure found in this music is what prompted Toral to re-examine the nature of his work. He has abandoned the guitar altogether and he claims "Space" to be a new beginning, where a new language had to be learned. Recorded in a studio and live at various concerts, the album is a perplexing mix of the sombre, the quiet, and the minimal and electronic elements. Some of the sounds originate from Toral's gloves that produce sine waves, while others are derived from amp feedback [which you'll swear sound like a trumpet]. Some of the music contained in the three extended sections remind me more of Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" sessions. The same muted trumpet effect is heard throughout much of the piece [though keep in mind, this is not an actual trumpet]. The best part is the amount of air Toral allows between sounds. There is enough to take a few breaths between the sounds of the percussive elements, muted piano and electric keyboard sounds. The move into "space" music has allowed Toral a greater amount of freedom. He can now make just about any sound with just about anything at his disposal. All of this under the guise of creating music that literally sounds if it arrived from outer space. Throughout most of the recording, you hear noises such as ray-gun shooting; laser blasts, asteroid explosions and video game noise [think original Asteroids back in the early 80's]. Much of this music sounds desolate and lonely and many times, I'm reminded of what Sun Ra recorded throughout mid to late 60's, as he concentrated on creating non-linear ways of musical expression. Funny thing is I already predict many people will confuse these sounds for ambient mode music. There's too many nuances for that to be the case. Tiny chirps of dying asteroids, little gurgles and a blast of space wind is enough to keep your mind rolling in this for hours. I'm capable of playing this CD non-stop for a full day, without ever questioning the music or getting bored with anything up for offer. Without going all gaga over this record, all I can add is "Space" is ecstatic. "Space" is beautiful. "Space" is a lonely way to spend an extra hour in your life.
