RASHIM

Rashim started their work as a formation in the audio realm about five years ago; when they spent time splicing and re-working CDs. Then, they'd play them on turntables to produce noisy soundscapes. Their first concert took place sometime last year, when according to their site "Rashim very proud, friends embarrassed". Second concert took place this year and this time "Rashim and friends embarrassed". Rashim are two women: Gina Hell and Yasmina Haddad. What they do on their debut full-length is amalgamate a ton of samples, together with acoustic elements and some electronics, to create a landscape of serene and haunting beauty. When they sing, as on "Shines", it's using a delay and whisper light vocals, rather than full-on screams. Then again on "Sheman", both women whimper hushed vocals that are supported by a keyboard and bass loop. Their main preoccupation is to make a seamless mix of the electronic and acoustic worlds. Maybe this is why they invited some guests into the studio to help accomplish this goal. Guitarist Florian Horwath plays broken-up, sampled guitar on "Kunstkomplex", while Martin Brandlmayr plays marimba and bass and Howe Gelb plays piano on the loving massacre of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse". In fact, if you want a chuckle, "Total Eclipse" is the perfect guarantee you'll have more than a few. Wonderfully still about this CD is the fact that none of the tracks are noisy or head into that direction. This is thought-out, clearly mapped-out music that is more concerned with the softer things, rather than the harsh realities. As the record comes to a close, you're not exactly sure what the precise purpose of Rashim's music is. If we assume it's the marriage of acoustic and electronic elements, then they've succeeded.
