GRIZZLY BEAR
Yellow House

Home-made acoustic songs have a certain charm about them. Whether you're listening to Nick Drake, Richard Thompson or Michelle Shocked, there's a special amount of magic to these hand-crafted gems. Fuelled by a strenuous break-up, Grizzly Bear leader, singer/guitarist Edward Droste recorded his first few songs in his Brooklyn apartment. Few years later, Grizzly Bear became a band - a quartet actually. Along with Droste, the band encompasses drummer/vocalist Christopher Bear, singer/guitarist Daniel Rossen and bassist/multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Christopher Taylor. The four men's mission is actually to produce harmonies that are as complex as they are simple and deafeningly beautiful. This is the sort of music you can play for your little kids before they doze off to slumberland. These guys have a real knack for mellow melodies and these haunting choruses that build up and then reach an ultimate peak.
Effective use of electronic keyboards and woodwinds makes for an austere landscape.
The chorus harmonies are breath-taking in an expansive sort of way. Check out "Knife" and its Beach Boys-like four-part harmony. Dripping with sweet honey and it doesn't get much better than this. That same type of sweetness continues with pure melodicism [and some sampled bird calls] on "Little Brother". One of the most dazzling takes is "Marla", which was written by Droste's great aunt at the beginning of the last century. Imagine Syd Barrett with a haunting piano motif, supported by a creepy, slumber vocal party from Droste. Spooky stuff indeed. The more I listen to "Yellow House", the more I'm convinced this is a work of maddening genius.
