ZOMBIE
Digitalis

[Static Caravan, www.staticcaravan.org]

A friend of mind once lent me an Italian horror flick on DVD from the early 80's. The plot didn't make much sense but from a purely visual standpoint, the film was very enriching. Full of demented women who were screaming in loud tones, which had death on their mind and had blood on their teeth. As I recall, the film was full of bloody imagery and in retrospect it was pure kitsch. The thing that saved it from being a C-movie [as opposed to a descent B flick] was the soundtrack. This was pure prog-rock bliss. Like Vangelis on acid or Uzeb with a kick, the music rode the waves of rocked-out new age. Zombie may have seen the same film I have. Made up of Steve Moore and A.E. Paterra, the duo bathes in the glory days of prog-rock-new-age genre. When you listen to their new [limited edition] EP "Digitalis", you feel their sense of urgency to be at one with days gone by. Three tracks on this barely 19 minute long EP goes by in a flash. Each one presents a different, though in many ways, similar aspect of 70's stadium prog-rock. With its woozing keyboards and its constant robotic beat, title track could be mistaken for most things Tangerine Dream produced during the early part of the 80's. If this doesn't have stadium rock written all over it, then I don't know what does. "Siberia" is a dark, icy journey, full of persistently even percussion, accompanied by what resembles an ominous chorus section. The only "fun" piece on the record is "Sapphire". As it meanders onward with a breezy keyboard line, a funky, robotic-beat, you realize these guys are either (a) serious about their craft, (b) love revisionism, or (c) are taking a piss at your expense.
