MIRROR
Still Valley

[Die Stadt, www.diestadtmusik.de]

Once again joined by Jim O'Rourke, Mirror's new direction is to slow sounds down. I'm not talking about a progression from fast to slow. I mean an actual stand still of all motion and movement. In fact, their new raison d'etre is to analyze music which moves, albeit slowly. In fact, the sounds more or less, stand still. CD comes adored with a green cover that features a cut-out of a cat. Depending on how you place the inside sleeve [that features a close up of a church bell tower and a picture of a church from a distance]; the cat will take on various shades of black and grey. While the music sits at a stand still - with oscillator shades, waves of subtle guitars, delicate shades of reverb and generally movements that seem like they've just given up on life. This is Mirror's greatest asset - the realization that sounds can be more subtle, that scorching themes can be understated and that their audience is ready for this alteration. While Christoph Heeman, Andrew Chalk and new [official and unofficial?] member Jim O'Rourke pursue the purity of the drone-based music creation process, there is no doubt in my mind the direction Mirror has chosen is dead on. Their focus on subtlety and things unspoken [those that are simply guessed at] is to be commended. What's even more fascinating is their unique sounds - though subtle they may be - have a hidden, very sinister quality to them. It's as if "The Fog" [remember the late 70's film?] were coming to a small town, hungry for a meal of human prey. Whether you take this as a soundtrack to a film or pure exercise in drone-mastery, "Still Valley" is another crucial document in forging new sounds from Mirror.
