SMUTNY
Telehors

In Polish, Smutny simply means sad. German composer Daniel Smutny makes music that may not be sad but there is this unmistakable sense of desolate loneliness in it, one can't help but be just a little bit morose about it. His full-length debut "Telehors" is an hour-long trek through the land of scratched-up records, intricate samples and near-mystifying piano breaks. It sounds as if Smutny went into the studio full of ideas. He put together a mish-mash of source recordings - tons of haunting piano phrases and lots of percussive elements [breaking glass, sounds of cymbals, cow bells and crashing toms. Thing that I enjoy the most about this record is its act of utter stillness. Though there are percussive elements, they're used in such a way as not to create a loud bang or a rhythmic seagway. Even though Smutny uses scratched up records, these are not used to annoy, they're used to create a textural landscape. Prepared piano that he uses here has a wonderful dull sound to it. In fact, it sounds like the person playing it is actually using the inside of the instrument to some good percussive effect. Atmospherics is what this music is all about. There is no grand scheme other than to present bits and pieces of found sounds, sampled things, and instruments played live through this guy's specific filter [also called a laptop]. All of these elements are fed through Smutny's unique vision of layered scenery, where things don't necessarily have to move to make progress - they simply are. It is in that state of stillness that we best observe their mutated states and is able to appreciate things as they are - twisted and skewed often beyond state of recognition, the music speaks volumes through whispers.
