GILBERT HOLMSTROM
A Celebration of 50 Years in Jazz

> From the label that gave us so many important Swedish jazz record by Lars Gullin, Harry Bäcklund, Rolf Billberg and Enar Jonsson, now comes this, a long-awaited re-issue of some of Gilbert Holmström's best work. Saxophonist Holmström was crucial in shaping Swedish jazz scene back in the 60's and 70's. His direct approach to his instrument and his rambunctious attitude made him stand out, though somehow, I don't think he was much of a show-off type. "A Celebration of 50 Years in Jazz" make up the entire "Liten Jazzsvit" album from 1964 along with three bonus tracks, recorded in 1966, which feature an American trombone player, Brian Trentham. We're also treated to one track from 1965 by Gilbert Holmström's Quintet. Not to be unfair, Holmström's music sounds much like another saxophone player from his neck of the woods, Bernt Rosengren. Many of the passages on the first four pieces ["Liten Jazzsvit"] recall Rosengren's tenderly chaotic overtones which were so apparent on the soundtrack to Polanski's "Knife in the Water". Though much of this music could probably be called hard-bop, there are occasions when Holmström stretches out. His rhythm section - Hans Löfman on bass and drummer Fredrik Norén - are tight and accompany Holmström into greater depths of his musical passion. The most exciting sections occur when Holmström duels out with cornet player Arne Larsson and tenor saxophonist Thomas Fehling. Pianist Clas Fehling pretty much stays off in the background, which is rather a shame. Material from 1966, features some keenly tight improvising from trombonist Brian Trentham, who does his best to overpower Holmström's already overheated sax. Only regret about this recording is the sound quality which tends to be somewhat muddy. Then again, this is music that was recorded in another time, on equipment that wasn't par by today's standards. Another highly important recording documenting Swedish jazz scene of years gone by.
