sunnO))) & BORIS
Altar

[Southern Lord, www.southernlord.com]

Everybody including your Grandma has been waiting for this collaboration to become reality. It's been talked about by everyone from BBC Metal channel to the Swahili National Metal Radio Network. All the birds and every living creature was uttering the name of these two bands coming together. "sunnO)))!! Boris!!", was all we heard for months. Can the "Altar" album live up to all the talk or is it just an over-hyped monstrosity that will fold under its own weight? There is only one disappointment with "Altar" in that it doesn't attack the listener with the same weight the last two sunnO))) and Boris releases have. There is barely any of the overbearing heaviness that we all loved on "Black One" and "Pink". It's almost as if both bands decided the sum of their individual parts would require greater innovation, more forethought and a lot of toning down. Instead of playing things at 11, their amps were tuned half-way, they went into the studio, invited a slew of special guests and let it rip in the best sense of that word. The starkest shock is this 180 degree turn-around. Instead of playing with their amps, both bands are now playing with tight structures and actual textures. "The Sinking Belle (Blue Sheep)" features haunting vocals from Jesse Sykes, who turns the nearly eight minute track something that sounds like a cross between a slithering snake and an empty cavernous dungeon. "Fried Eagle Mind" is a dirge number that features a very slow build-up leading up to the ultimate sheer metal climax of a myriad of guitars and overkill of noise. Soundgarden's guitarist Kim Thayil is featured on the 15 minute long "Blood Swamp". The track revolves around a slow-grinding noise flurry that moves along with individual rhythm guitar leads. Each of the bands adds something unique. While sunnO))) offers up their well-known dirge and ear-splitting volume, Boris brings their psychedelic tinge to the table and gives the listener something softer and even lyrical. If I was to call "Altar" a lyrical moment in metal history, would anyone tend to get upset?
