ALEXANDER TUCKER
Furrowed Brow

[ATP Recordings, www.atpfestival.com/atp-recordings]

Alexander Tucker, whose "Old Fog" release from last year truly opened my eyes to this crooner's depressing side, has just released the follow-up in the form of "Furrowed Brow". Whereas the previous release was a walk through a dementia-filled, depression mine-field, this time around, Tucker is centering on finding his focal sound. What is the defining Tucker sound, you ask? There isn't just one. In fact, there are many. In between the many haunting guitar picking moments, there are hum-along buzzings, there are moments of haunting beauty and something that is just outright weirdness [in the best case of that word, of course]. How you explain the tape loops prominent throughout most of "Broken Dome", I'm not sure. How you justify the scraping violin that is heard on that piece, I'm not sure either. Tucker is best when he's left alone to pick a gloriously melodic blues motif as he does on "Saddest Summer" [which for my liking is much too brief] but he's also a master at the dark and ominous motifs that loop around each other, such as those present on "Pannemaker Doms". As Tucker sings, you get the impression as if he's tired and abandoned. When the soloing gets heavy, as it does on "Superherder", there is nothing to do but to sit and wonder at the thick, clustery wall of sheer noise. The layered effect is superfluous and takes first priority in all of the pieces. Dark and ominous mood is still persistent but then again, we're talking about a man who isn't exactly all about sunshine either. "Furrowed Brow" continues to unravel the mystery behind this individual and gives hope for other great works in the future.
