BROADCAST
The Future Crayon

[Warp Records, www.warprecords.com]

Broadcast has received more than its share of Stereolab comparisons. Point is that neither Trish Keenan nor John Cargill ever wanted to follow in the footsteps of the great British outfit. They simply had a quiet desire to doodle on music in the studio, bring back some sounds from the past and let it all hang out. On "The Future Crayon" we get but a glimpse of Broadcast's potential, though it's a fairly accurate glimpse, I must say. Rather than an album proper, "The Future Crayon" is actually a compilation of their UK EP's and some hard-to-find rarities. The material spans 1998's "We Are Reasonable People" all the way through to 2003's "Pendulum". The question for those not into Broadcast is what is their sound? What does this duo like to eat? Where do they hang out and why haven't they adopted an endangered koala bear from China yet? In all seriousness, they're a true soup of influences, spanning Ennio Morricone, spaghetti westerns, cut'n'paste loops, through to the psychedelia of Iron Butterfly. What a beautiful sound it is when you realize, as with good pinot noir, they grind away at their music, and bit by bit, their sound only gets better with age. "Unchanging Window/Chord Simple" is a perfect example of their minimal psychedelic laziness. Fuzzy guitars accompany Trish's laid-back vocal to produce a simple melodic backdrop. An interesting bonus is the inclusion of the psychotic mish-mash "DDL" from "All Tomorrow's Parties" compilation. As an added bonus, inside the record, there is a pull-off postcard that allows you to put a freely picked sentence on it. Once you send this into Warp, the band will then re-arrange a chosen sentence and set it to music. All people who have contributed to their "song collaboration" will receive a special edition of the track in a format that will be decided once the project is complete. A mixed up compilation for a mixed up world that says more than words will even convey.
