KHLYST
Chaos is my Name

[Hydra Head Records, www.hydrahead.com]

Los Angeles based Hydra Head empire rolls from strength to strength, as they unleash two wickedly hard, harsh releases on our unprepared, virgin ears.
First is a re-issue of Swedish outfit's Heresi "Psalm II: Infusco Ignis" release. Unbelievably hard and unstoppably mental in its guitar compartment, this is grind-core metal at its loudest. Charge is led by vocalist Skamfer who unleashes brutal fury on each of the five tracks. Problem is I can't make out a single word or phrase he's yelling out. It's all buried beneath this thick, gluey cluster of perpetual grinding guitars, drums and bass. The highlight here is the album is kept to a 28 minute length, which prevents any sameness from setting in. This is still a fine journey nonetheless. Recommended to those who enjoy their metal seriously loud and furious.
Bassist James Plotkin [Phantomsmasher] and vocalist Runhild Gammelsaeter of sunnO))) and Thorr Hammer fame come together to give us one of the tastiest morsels in fine metal I'd heard in years. Khlyst's "Chaos is my Name" is not just metal, but art metal. You can't really bang your head or shake your fists to this little nightmare. This album swallows you up whole. It guts you up from inside and throws away the remains. It cares not whether you're into flesh eating, Satan worship or whether you just enjoy burning religious symbols on your front lawn. It makes the nightmares from Elm Street seem like bedtime stories. Work of terror, work of agony and most of all, this is work of dark genius. Sure, Plotkin's bass is super-ultra heavy and grinds your ears into submission but what speaks volumes to me louder than the few ultra-meshing passages, are the more sombre numbers. "VI" is just over seven minutes of ultra low, bass rambling, heard as if in a vacuum far away, while "II" features ghostly echoes accompanied by sheet metal percussion [not unlike what Le Quan Ninh used to play]. Mind-altering and brain-smashing morsels that make up an album to be re-played in your mind when lights are out. Scream, for you don't stand a chance!
