Strange Country

[Albion Records, www.strange-country.co.uk]

The thing that baffles my mind about this compilation is why would anyone want to label country music "strange"? Is there a marketing person out there who's working overtime to make country sound more dangerous, more over-the-top? Is all country so soft and ear-friendly that applying the term "strange" makes it that much more bearable and ok for the youth of today to dive into? These are just a few thoughts that popped into my mind while listening to this very outstanding record. For someone who doesn't sit heavily in the country tradition [though my Dad listened to a lot of country when I was growing up - Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson
even John Denver] the record was an eye-opener in terms of what could actually be stuck with the country label. Gene Clark tends to sound like Michael Stipe on downers on "In a Misty Morning", while Jolie Holland sounds like an ethereal form on "Crush in the Ghetto". The inclusion of Giant Sand [and their mesmerizing "Shiver 12"] is not surprising considering Howe Gelb has been dabbling in backyard folk-country for two decades. I'm torn in terms of highlights. Grey DeLisle's tender reading of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Smog's dour take on "Rock Bottom Riser" both get top marks in my book. Classic country legends make an appearance as well. Johnny Cash shows up with a heartfelt live version of "The Long Black Veil". Willie Nelson puts a somber rendition of "Time of the Preacher" and the set ends with an all-time classic - Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man". There is much variety to be had within this hour-long set. No matter how you slice it, country is not the type of music you thought it was. Perhaps not dangerous but a tad bit "strange".
