Under the guise of yet another collaborative effort, Australian guitar non-conformist put together a duo with guitar innovator Keith Rowe. Though they've collaborated previously [most notably on their duo collaboration "Flypaper" and on "Thumb" release with Robbie Avenaim, Otomo Yoshihide and Sachiko M], this time around the music is different. There is thick tension on the single 43 minute "Squire" that can only be cut with a large steak knife. Recorded back in 2002 at the Loft in Cologne, the disc exudes a dense sound that is persistent from beginning to end. Rarely do we recognize that anyone is playing a guitar - be it Ambarchi's processed guitar or Rowe's tabletop [though Rowe's cacophony is more akin to an actual guitar]. Sounds come in hums and slither towards an inevitable conclusion. At times, they recall a whistle, while at other times they remind me of an industrial drilling machine. Lots of glissando crackles appear in the cavities as the gradual changes occur from one movement to the next. Most interesting bit is what sounds like a comb being moved across a chalk-board. Wonderful in its persistence to make their sounds come together as one, there is no scraping tension and nothing that would point to a fight of ideals. Grating and lulling atmospherics that are persistently brilliant, this duo has yet to hit a lull point.
Reissue of Oren Ambarchi's second solo release for Touch can only be described as a good move [considering first pressing was out of print]. If only to let latecomers familiarize themselves with this Australian guitarist's earlier work, it serves its purpose well. The way he treats and processes the guitar is now a well known fact. Rarely can we guess at what the source instrument actually is - maybe it is a guitar or maybe it's an organ or some other foreign object. Moving as series of slowly progressing hums, buzzes and drones, Ambarchi introduces his vision ever so slowly, so as not to shock the system with anything that may be too drastic. Though the mood he sets up for the recording is more on the gloomy side, this isn't really music that I'd call depressing or morose. I hear a certain smidgen of hope and if you really listen closely, there is sun peeking through the clouds. I love the way these tiny, trickling scraping sounds end "Wednesday", after an extended phase of slow bass-like progression. "Vogler" starts off with a concrete, almost-harsh sound that is slowly thinned out by the end of its 12 minute duration. The title track, which features a dense surface of Wurlitzer piano is perhaps the most "lovely" of the bunch. Put through all sorts of electronic treatments, the sound is serene, while retaining its deep, bass quality. Album's closer - the 14 minute "As Far as the Eye Can See" - is one continuous, slowly moving drone. Warm, intimate and bursting with ideas to spare, the re-issue of "Suspension" confirms Ambarchi's place in the field of minimal sounds.
