CERRONE
Love in C Minor
Supernature 3

[Recall Records, www.recallrecords.com]

There's no denying, the king of disco [at least on the European front], Cerrone has had a big impact. Drummer/composer and all-around disco-freak, Cerrone knew a good thing when he first heard it and decided to stretch his 15 minute ride of fame as long as he possibly could. Recall Records has just begun a massive undertaking with the reissue of some of his original vinyl records onto CD. While each one of the re-issued albums is special and unique in its own way, "Love in C Minor" and "Supernature 3" capture what's best about this guy.
The first album features a nifty cover. There's Cerrone in his sex-god black robe, kneeling next to a nude redhead who is wearing nothing more than a green bandana. Their clothes are messily laid out in front of them. The title track starts off with a dialogue of women sitting around comparing men's body parts. Locker room trash talk for the porn crowd at its best. This is followed by a sprawling 16 minute track full of ecstatic beats and soft "love me" phrased over and over again. It's as if Stars on 45 were re-born again. But wait, this dates back to 1976 - disco's glory days - so what else would you expect. Cerrone's version of "Black is Black" is a tad less hypnotic but is equally ecstatic and uplifting. "Midnite Lady" is another one of these "let's fuck now" numbers that is sure to get a few extra "ohhs" and "ahhs" out of your lover. Released one year later, "Supernature 3" continues to showcase Cerrone with his stylish clothes, his crazed hairdo and his "do me" attitude. This time around, the cover features Cerrone standing in front of an operating table, with three monstrous looking people, dressed up like pigs or dogs [it's hard to tell - the masks are cheaply made]. The title track features much of the familiar female vocalists reciting "Supernature" over and over and over again. All of this is wrapped up in a blanket of warmth, good-lovin' beats and trance-inducing rhythms. If you can imagine a disco drum solo, then you'll have no problems with "Sweet Drums". Swiftly caressing drums surrounded by orchestral goodness. The surprise comes with "In the Smoke" - a gutsy, atmospheric number that features a ton of Tangerine Dream like keyboard work. [If they were handing out awards for disco-ambiance, Cerrone would qualify for one!] Instrumentals were a strong forte as well. "Give Me Love" outshines the competition and leaves it standing in the dust. Other than a few Love Unlimited numbers, I can't remember a track that's as sultry as this one. Enjoyable to the max and full of humid, dripping sex, Cerrone had a knack for delivering the goods. Yummy music for those that remember the 70s and those who wish they were around to live through this wacky stuff.
