[Aidan Baker, www.aidanbaker.org]

Toronto producer / musician / writer Aidan Baker has produced dozens of recordings in a short span of time. When you venture to his web-site [http://www.netrover.com/~amizen/ahsyd.htm], you're bound to find a few dozen up for sale at any given point and time. Classically trained on flute, he taught himself to play guitar, drums and a score of other instruments. This slew of releases represents the many faces of this musically hyperactive musician.
Oneiromancer is someone who practices predicting the future through interpretation of dreams. Baker's hour long journey is a free-floating meditation on the power of dreams. These are not just dreams, as the record sounds more like an audio transcript of his nightmares. Illusions to death, falling, desperation, hurt, immortality and loss of memory are made throughout the album. According to the sleeve of the CD, instrumentation used on the album is electric & bass guitars, tape loops, piano, percussion/drum machine and vocals. Music seems to float and in reality has a dream-like quality about it. Chamber-like echoes are heard everywhere, while tape loops of indiscernible voices pop in and out of ear's range. Most impressive is the continuity of the album. Vocals are truly eerie and add a certain amount of uncertainty to the flow of the sounds. In certain moments, when listening to this album at night, I imagine these to be ghosts that want to jump out at me. To be used as sleep inducing music or perhaps best fitting as music by which to soothe your worst nightmares, "Oneiromancer" is one of the better demanding ambient releases I've heard in a while.
What began as Baker's solo project has transformed into a duo. "Bodycage" is a re-issue of a 2005 limited-edition CD-R on Nothingness Records by the Canadian band Nadja. The duo is made up of Baker on guitars, flute, vocals and drum machine and Leah Buckareff on bass. This is music that I'd be scared to label as anything close to ambient. If heavy repetitive riffs make sense, then Nadja's music is for you. Their crunchy guitars, wrapped in hollering vocals and metal scraping bass will have you begging for mercy before the first 22 minute piece is finished. By the time we get to "Ossification", the terrain changes 180 degrees. At this point, the band decides to turn it down a few notches and play it more subtly, with less reverb. Still gloomy music but at this point, their sounds are actually capable of soothing. Believe it or not, after a few dozen spins, "Bodycage" seems to grow on you. Like a slowed-down Loop on acid with a heavier pulse at its core, Nadja rule the metallic airwaves of satiation. As the name suggests, "Remixes" release is an opportunity given to other artists to re-do Aidan Baker's work. While most remix albums go all over the map, this one stays consistently solid. With contributions from people such as Andrea Marutti, Naw, Wilt, Troum, Pilotram, Building Castles out of Matchsticks and others, each track is as surprising as the one that came before it. While Cordell Klier's take on "I've Been Waiting For You" is rather soothing in a floating way, The Blameshifter's "Hands Making Hands" gets downright grating and obnoxiously harsh. Fear Falls Burning's "Gossamer" has a telepathic, radio-quality about it, while Andrea Marutti's take on "Metamorphose, 2nd stage (reconstruction # 2)" is brilliantly still. Surprisingly enough, Troum make a very subdued effort at interpreting "When You Scream". Listening to the record all the way through is not much of a challenge. Most of the artists involved decide to stay true and pump out rather serene versions of originals. Melodies come easy and the album's ebb and flow has a natural tendency about it. Perfect album for a dream spent in drenching sweat.
