FOUNDATION HOPE
The Faded Reveries

[Cold Meat Industry, www.coldmeat.se]

Industrial music is sometimes best when it's toned down a notch. When the lights go out, you get the best opportunity to devour these two hungry bands. Rome's debut EP "Berlin" somehow by-passed these ears. No matter, their debut full-length, appropriately titled "Nera" has left a positive impact on me. With its deathly serious straight face, but with a charming smile, they make music that is both dark and out of all things, ominously quite soothing. I find the series of percussive beats and Jerome Reuter's voice quite relaxing. Imagine a Nick Cave on downers, and you're half-way there. It's rare nowadays to find a vocalist that is so wholly involved in his lyrics and who makes music of these grandeur proportions. Reuter's approach is very sombre. This is heady stuff he's singing about. To be honest, death and all the rest doesn't interest me that much, but his delivery is second to none. That straight-face approach make the album for what it is. Combined with occasional acoustic guitars and cavernous effects, the music takes on a proportion of an entire choir. All songs are shaded with heavy shadows and dark themes, which is only to be expected. Some of it sounds more like marching music than an attempt to draw in industrial fans. More folk music than heady industrial stuff, though retaining the seriousness of industrial genre, "Nera" is a fine example of what can be achieved when one starts to think outside the box.
Dutchman Joep Smaling, going under an alias Foundation Hope, takes a much darker approach to his music. These are all drones and windy echoes. It sounds like the guy is into scaring the living hell out of his audience. Occasional cracks and pops intensify the effect. Some of these sounds remind me of echoes that are made inside of an empty cathedral or a dark, moist cave, while others resemble a record spun backwards. For the most part, the landscape is overtly still, to the point where one wonders if anything of interest will take place. Ultimately, the interest on the record lies in the tiny nuances of the details. Listen to "The Faded Reveries" on headphones. A guaranteed trip to the nether regions of dark domains of the human gut.
