SHUTTLE 358
Frame

[12K, www.12K.com]

When released back in 1999, Shuttle 358's debut "Optimal.lp" release didn't really make that great of an impact on me. For some reason, Dan Abrams' vision of a miniscule sound didn't hit me across the face like a ton of bricks. I missed the follow-up and had no idea what all the fuss was about, until now. Abrams is quick to point out, his music is all about the finer details, rather then the whole picture, "If you put an empty frame against a blank wall, you suddenly notice the color, the patterns, and the imperfections in the plaster. The frame is like a window of perception. It takes the wall outside time. The frame draws attention to what is within it—it magnifies it, you focus on it, it begins to symbolize the whole wall." Since its release seven years ago, "Frame" has become somewhat of a collector's item, with people swapping their copies on auction house services at ridiculous prices. Sure enough, 12K jumped in to the rescue and resuscitated the album for a new generation of listeners. Details are foremost to Abrams. This is his life in a nutshell. No comparison will do in this case. You can't really compare this music to Eno's "Music for Airports" for instance as unlike Eno, Abrams is a thousand-fold more concerned with tiny cracks, buzzes, pops and waves of sounds that are next to impossible to hear on the surface. I know this sounds strange but it's almost as if he's sucking sound from a stone. Sure, there are beats on the record, but these are all but disjointed from any real sense of rhythm. There is more crackling, quiet whooshing and dire ambience than anything else. If anything, Abrams is the master at drawing pictures in the listener's head. Obtuse, angular but highly relaxing and provoking much thought, "Frame" is a masterpiece that is finally about to get its day in the spotlight.
