CHARLEMAGNE PALESTINE
A Sweet Quasimodo Between Black Vampire Butterflies for Maybeck

[Cold Blue Music, www.coldbluemusic.com]

Charlemagne Palestine's latest opus [with a title that I'm still trying to decipher] is a magnificent on-going study of his "strumming" piano style he's been practicing since the late 60's. The piece was performed by Palestine playing two Yamaha pianos simultaneously in a tremolo style. As usual, the effect is mesmerizing. The piece actually starts off gently enough, as a series of only a few keys is meticulously hit over and over again. Over time, the reverberation gets more and more intense. Then for a few minutes, the fire dies down, only to build up in a matter of seconds. Once it builds up, sheer intensity is kept up for the remainder of the piece. Resonance throughout is unbelievably hypnotic. If anything, Palestine is still the master of his own game by introducing new elements in his game of minimalism. The more you listen to the piece, the more detailed nuances you're bound to find. It's as if the melody and complex harmony presented get away from you and play tricks on your mind. As I listen to the piece for the nth time, I'm still discovering new details I've not heard the previous time around. Am I going insane or is Palestine a genius in masking another, more diffused melody beneath this sheet of icy-cold, precision key-splattering manic showdown? As a bonus, the preamble to the piece finds Palestine singing a wildly amusing song, where apparently he uses a brandy snifter?! [if he does, I don't hear brandy being poured for the audience members]. The song sounds more as if it were meant to be a lullaby for a restless baby. He even ruminates about his life in California at the tail end of the 60's. Perhaps the piece should've been included as a part of a Palestine vocal record. Compared to its grandiose 37-minute piano mass, it seems so out of place.
