British bassist Nick Stephens is a highly adaptable player. Having played with nearly everyone in the improvised scene from the UK, he has developed a language that one can only call his very own. This slew of releases sees him duke it out with the cream of the crop of the improvised faction.
Trio Fo is an ensemble Stephens put together with percussionist Tony March and flautist Neil Metcalfe. First thing that comes to mind when one listens to this trio performance from October 2005 is the complete adaptability of all three players. Turns out, Metcalfe takes over the session and makes it for what it is. His extended techniques and wonderful pointed blows on the flute make the rhythm section work all the harder. Intensity creeps in at various points during the performance as Metcalfe continues to drive the session forward. Stephens has some nice arco moments and Marsh tends to keep things lite on the percussion set [playing lots on the hi-hats]. Flute is an underused instrument in improvised music. Based on that premise alone, "Breaking Silence" is a highly driven, exhausting performance. Trading in the flautist for another wind player, "Live at the Termite Club" features the undeniable [though often underlooked] talents of Norwegian saxophonist Frode Gjerstad. Joining him is Nick Stephen on bass and percussionist Paul Hession. The live session, dating back to September 2003 features two elongated numbers [clocking in at around the half an hour mark] and one shorter one, at a mere 8 minute mark. Gjerstad's work on clarinet is breath-taking. Listen to the way he uses extended techniques on "Meeting at the Adelphi". When he switches over the sax, the music gains a muscular tone of its own. Check out an early section of "Brewers Tap" for an outstanding example of what true trio communication is all about. As Gjerstad is blowing jugular lines on the alto, the rhythm section creates a solid wall of sheath beneath him. Later on in the same piece, Hession goes on to take a muscular drum solo. Stephens' playing is top notch throughout, as he switches between some uncommon arco passages along with ear-popping fingering techniques. Top notch disc for all three men.
Dedicated to the late, great saxophonist Elton Dean, "Today's Play" sees Stephens' trio switch instruments once again. This time around, he invited percussionist Tony Marsh and trumpeter Jon Corbett. There's something in Corbett's intensely loose trumpet guffaws that make this a record I return to again and again. Not unlike an earlier Dave Douglas, Corbett plays short and concise counterpoint lines that hover around the foreground of the aural spectrum. Rhythm section is once again unbeatable. As Stephens provides plenty of caressing arco moments, Marsh is keen on staying a course of subtle percussive caresses. I find the music introspective and meditative all at once. Flawless communication is heard throughout the record from all three players. Perfect listening on a lazy weekend morning and another fine example of exemplary and persistent work from bassist Nick Stephens.
