Expedition series of samplers is more or less meant to give the listener more of an insight into the experimental/glitch/dance scene in Switzerland. Though not all encompassing [it features artists mostly associated with Everest label], they both give an inherent picture of what this side of aural spectrum sounds like in a land overflowing with reliable watches and great chocolate. Surprisingly enough, the first album in the series starts off with a wicked tune from Bassdriver. With its industrial, menacing beat, "8+zwanzig" ends up approximating the territory Young Gods were mining so many years ago. Iso Brown's contribution is all clicks and skewed beats, while Krankenzimmer 204 hollers up some tastefully prepared sheets of thick, sloppy noise. Still, there are moments of wonderful, even carefree dance bleeps from people such as Feldermelder and Filewile. More mean-sounding groove-expert vocal music arrives in the form of Herbaljazz and their nearly pop infused tune "W.i.s.e.s." In my mind, the best contributions come from Herpes ö Deluxe and rm74. While Herpes ö Deluxe offers up a drone-induced, guitar-drenched piece that builds up quite nicely in its profuse need for an ultimate all-encompassing climax [that features keyboards, organs and such], rm74's "Italienische Autohupe" is a different matter altogether. For nearly 11 minutes, Reto Mäder provides tiny glitches, pin-pong game effects and small pools of static that mesh into one big whole. The piece sounds as if a radio had just gone haywire. It definitely marks a triumph for this entire compilation. "Expedition_2" gets even deeper into the darker, lesser explored territories than its predecessor. Mixing ominous ambience, sinister glitches and computer-generated madness, this is music that is meant to disturb as well as challenge. Moving daftly between [sic]'s sickening gloomy ambience on "I Should Have Fucked You" through to the high-pitched glistens on Hopen's "D Flat 9", the album moves in mysterious ways. Nobody should be surprised then when Jotta's maximum strength industrial beat number comes around. The persistently messed up beats on Eakui's contributions are more fun than gloom. Since I prefer an overall ambience of a piece, Steinbrüchel's "Schnitt (+.++)" which is a minimal take on what could be a humming generator spoke fairly clearly to me. Misel Quitno's all too brief "Crosswinds" is another example where technology that appropriates the environment makes for great music. Another winner is Uniform's self explanatory "How to Destroy a Piano". Throughout the piece's four minute duration, all I could think about is the poor instrument getting demolished into tiny shreds of wood. Maybe a tad uneven in points but overall, both "Expedition" compilations are worth exploring for their hidden treasures lying beneath the surface.
