MIKE IN MONO
Euro Eccentric

[Static Caravan, www.staticcaravan.org]

You know a band wants to make it big when they pen a song after their own name. Such is the case with Men-An-Tol. According to their My Space website, Men-An-Tol's influences range from granite, radon, narwhals, palm trees, salt water, stretching starfish, salad, boredom, tea, sex, stickers, unemployment, flea markets and three old stones and the beauty of life in all its horror and glory. Self-described as "music made from wood", but more precisely music from the woods – some backwoods of good'ol England. Composed of Pete, Richie, Lucie, Mike and Susumu on various guitars, banjos, percussion, wind instruments even and vocals, the quintet goes from the backwoods to medieval times in a split second. The four songs on their self-titled limited edition EP [printed in 200 copies only] are nothing but a party of five dwarves singing harmonies with Robin Hood in perfect harmony. Speaking of perfect harmony, their tunes are sung in just that. The choruses feature half-spoken, half-sung, half-drunk renditions of songs that barely anyone dares to attempt any more. Vocals are gnarly, whiny and coarse. Within a matter of seconds, they can turn on a whim. There's a half-hazard beat here that is pleasant, though it's kept to the background. Folk music with a tinge of acid and perfectly skewed on the BBQ to perfection.
Solo venture from Michael Johnston [Plone] aka Mike in Mono is a small little 7" called "Euro Eccentric". Quoting from his My Space profile, he's supposed to sound like "Che Guevara and Debussy to a disco beat" [hey – are those Pet Shop Boys lyrics?] and the description is quite accurate. Imagine a hyper-active school-aged kid who just got his first RY30 drum machine and can't get the funk off the beat. That's what this single is all about – going back in time to a safer, warmer planet, where anything was possible. Johnston perfectly encapsulates that era in a span of the 4 minute single. Like a more upbeat Kraftwerk, the beats are cold and fuzzy and the repetitive "Euro Eccentric" phrase is repeated over and over. B-side "Binary" is equally as good, though it's missing a certain kind of oomph [that's why it was chosen as the b-side, I guess]. If you dug Axel F, you'll love Mike in Mono. Nothing left to do but put your sneakers on and move the booty that mamma gave you. One of the better takes on medieval dance music I'd heard in ages. When's the full length coming out?
