MOSKITOO
Drape

[12K, www.12K.com]

There have been hints 12K is slowly changing directions. First, there was an introduction of Happy – a sub-label that allowed for more pop-oriented materials to come about. Then, there was the "Blueprints" compilation from late last year, with the inclusion of some material that had definite pop-potential simmering underneath. Things have now come to a full boil as the label unravels its first act that is leaning heavily in the pop territory. Sanae Yamasaki – aka Moskitoo – is a Japanese vocalist/electronics artist. Hailing from northern Japan, she employs a number of means and methods to get her message across. The cool textures on the album are garnered with the use of metallophone, organ, guitar, drum machines, synths and some other nostalgic toy instruments [whatever these may be]. Her voice is crystalline and overtly fragile. Like a cool icicle, or a treacherous winter wind, it sends shivers up and down your spine. Not unlike Stina Nordenstam, in moments, you're afraid, she'll break and cease to exist. That's just how frail her chords are. Luckily, the musical mass is interesting enough to diffuse the fragility of the vocals. Sure, there are minute clicks and pops inserted at all the right moments, but it's the way instrumentation is arranged that is interesting. Believe it or not, there are actual beats on this record. Many times, the original instruments used to create the sounds are unrecognizable, while at other intersections, you clearly hear the organ cloaked percussion. This is delicate stuff. One crack in the ice and you're a goner. Prick your ears up or best yet, listen on headphones for best effect. I only wish I knew what Yamasaki was singing about but then I'd feel that I was spying on some very private monologues. Jam-packed full of some really cool ideas and brimming with wonderfully soothing textures, "Drape" is a perfect concoction to warm up to on a chilling winter night. As with anything 12K has touched over the years, I predict this new change of direction will prove to be a real hit.
