DAISUKE MIYATANI
Diario

[Ahornfelder, www.ahornfelder.de]

Organic source music is something that is rarely heard nowadays. You either get into the new-age category and fall asleep at its destitute boredom or you venture into the field recording category but end up missing the part with the instruments. Lo and behold, we see the arrival of these fine releases from a label intent on fusing categories at will.
He hides under many disguises but Jörg Follert has a recognizable sound. Whether he's known as Wechsel Garland or his latest mask of 17 Pictures makes no difference at all. You can still glimpse that folk-acoustic electronic element in everything he touches. On the latest release, Follert is obsessed with the guitar as his primary source for music creation. His main instrument is picked gently, caressed with extra care. Alongside the guitar, he's got a number of other instruments up his sleeve that he's not afraid to pull out of the closet. Most amazing is the harmonica. When he struts his tiny little lines [check out "Mirror Valley Theme # 1"], it's as if Stevie Wonder was pulling the knobs in the production room, smiling in agreement. When we move away from the harmonica, we're struck with the blues as is the case with "Mirror Valley Theme # 2". Is this a case of laziness or is Follert immersing himself in the blues? When marimba and banjos enter the picture, the music turns itself into a reflective medium. There is so much warmth here, yet the whole release sounds rather lonely and desolate. Unifying musical idea ties the whole release together with a neat repeating theme. Considering the record clocks in at just over half-an-hour mark, you can't help but put this disc on auto-repeat and enjoy this sense of introspection over and over again.
Bookkeeper by choice and musician by nature, Daisuke Miyatani is another composer who chooses the guitar as the key compositional tool. His most recent release "Diario" features a slew of acoustic guitars, along with a ton of xylophones. What's most interesting is on a number of the pieces, he uses field recordings done by Tatsuya Toyota. As the name suggests, "Rain Melodies" features an even splattering of rain drops, cars driving in rain, all accompanied with the most serene guitar picking. "Summer Child" features the same guitar progression, slowed down by a notch, this time around surrounded in a sea of crickets. As the night falls on the backwoods, the calls of owls come within our hearing range. If there was a phrase to describe what Miyatani is doing on this release it would be organic source music. It is organic – guitars, xylophones – while the "source" part is the ambience and field recording aspect. This is stuff you hear in the air. Natural as the spring breeze and the smell of damp wetland after a rainfall, "Diario" is simply human music. Easy listening rarely felt this real.
