KATHY DIAMOND
Miss Diamond To You

[Permanent Vacation, www.permanent-vacation-records.com]

To say I was blown away by this release is a complete understatement. The phat bass lines that initiate the album's opening track "Between the Lines" were a nice throw-back. Not a throw-back in a bad sense. This was disco, soul and funk being re-invented for a younger generation - for all the kids that are too young to remember "Stars on 45" LPs. This is music made specifically for everyone who's too young to recall the days of Parliament, Earth, Wind & Fire and Jackson 5. The stuff that made me so damn hot as a kid is back, this time done up with soulful vocals from Kathy Diamond. UK native, Diamond possesses some deep and lovely vocal chords. When I say deep, I'm talking Minnie Ripperton territory [minus the octave range], not the fakeness that's heard in most singers on today's radio airwaves. The woman is in total control of her style. She wants to dwell on funk, she does just that. If she wants to do disco or soul, I'm down with that too. Even though all music was written by Maurice Fulton, Diamond gives off an impression of the one being in charge of the whole project. When she sings "I came, I saw, I conquered your heart", on "In All You See a Woman", she's strongly convinced of every single word she utters. The bass on these tracks is phat, with a capital P. What's great about the record is its emphasis on the minimal. Oftentimes, this will involve a repetition of a single phrase - as on "The Moment" - or a recurring percussive beat that pounds your head ad infinatum. On "Over", we see emergence of a fine organ line, accompanied by vocals that at this point turn psychedelic and space-like. Funny thing is, I'm not so sure Kathy Diamond wants to be the next diva. She just wants to rock out and let the good music flow as it may. As far as real deals are concerned - this is it! You can't afford to miss this one out!
