NINE HORSES
Money For All

[Samadhi Sound, www.samadhisound.com]

Released a couple of years ago, Nine Horses was an exceptional debut for band made up of David Sylvian and multi-instrumentalists Steve Jansen and Burnt Friedman. The record itself was cool to the touch, which was mostly due to its use of intricate arrangements and computer imagery. Still, I connected to it and to me; it became one of the best records David Sylvian was not able to muster during his illustrious solo career. Make no mistake, "Money for All" is not an entirely new record. Rather, it consists of remixed versions of a few of the better tracks from the eponymous album. The crucial point is, the EP [which is an odd name for something that lasts 45 minutes] features three new tracks, one of which was a rare, Japanese only version. "Wonderful World" isn't radically changed perhaps under the guise of Burnt Friedman. It's a tad more edgy perhaps in points but otherwise, Stina Nordenstam's vocals are as clever and delicate as ever. The contrast between her and Sylvian's baritone is most welcome. The mentioned Japanese only B-side, "Birds Sing for Their Lives" features Nordenstam once again, only this time her voice wallops for only the first two minutes or so, only to be replaced with electronic gadgetry and delicate ramblings of percussion and bass. Friedman's version of "The Banality of Evil" takes on a more obscure mask. Featuring rousing guitar from Joseph Suchy and Thomas Elbern, along with intense cello plucking from Claudio Bohorquez and that serene clarinet playing of Hayden Chisholm, the track is one of those perfect Nine Horses moments. Sylvian's voice is as relaxed as ever, though a certain amount of severity of anger comes through in "Get the Hell Out" and "Money for All". If you enjoyed the debut record or if Rain Tree Crow still rings close to your heart, you'll ultimately fall in love with this gem.
