ZU & NOBUKAZU TAKEMURA
Identifications with the Enemy, A Key to the Underworld

[Atavistic, www.atavistic.com]

Last time I caught up with Italian genre-breaking maniacs Zu was sometime in the late 90's, when they'd released their wild "The Zu Side of the Chadbourne". They were tight, manic and their ideas flew faster than the speed of light. Not much has changed since then. This time around, playing with Japanese new music/noise technician Nobukazu Takemura, the band sound revitalized and alive with new ideas to spare. Sure, their sense of urgency is still persistent. We're told Takemura uses electronics on the album, which is fine, until you realize just how drastically this alters the direction the band has taken. The quartet rallies hard against the electronic side. They put up a good fight even. On numbers like "Alone with the Alone" and "Everyone Gets His Own Nemesis", they rock hard and steady. The barrage of no-wave fun rolls on with jugular sax blows, harsh bass rooted in metal and percussion that is firm and belligerent. If any of this stuff reminds you of NoMeansNo, then you're about right on the mark. In fact, Zu has shared stage with the Wright brothers and recently recorded some material with the band. When the electronics come in, they come full blast. There are no in-betweens. Both Jacopo Battaglia and Takemura take their roles in leading electronics charge quite seriously. On "Deliver Me From the Book of Self", both men spread warm fuzzes of glitch hums through the landscape, while "Awake in the Next Room" features the two humming it up with some nice high-pitched concoctions, while in the other half of the track, the band steps in with a slow, morose rhythm. Massimo Pupillo's bass has not lost its magic touch. He's still the one leading the charge; which becomes all the more effective when Luca T. Mai steps in with direct blows on his baritone. Wonderful thing is, after so many years, it's still hard to pin these guys down. Rock? No-wave? Jazz? Improvised music? In a nutshell, this is an off-the-wall record for people who hate genres.
