MARTYN BATES
Your Jewled Footsteps

[Sub Rosa, www.subrosa.net]

Deeply rooted in traditional English music, Martyn Bates has always tread a path that led him against the grain of popular culture. Through many years of his duo with Peter Becker, Eyeless in Gaza pursued a path less travelled.  His fascination with underlying pop culture of years gone by is something commendable and a tad strange at the same time. Having been described as a romantic and a soulful voice, his artistry is just now beginning to be truly recognized as Sub Rosa releases not one but two compilations of his work. One is the Eyeless in Gaza compilation "Plague of Years", compiling songs and instrumentals written between 1980 and 2006, while the other one is "Your Jewled Footsteps", compiling solo and collaboration pieces between 1979 and 2005. This side of Martyn is the one that has always fascinated me the most. I mean, how is it that anyone in their right mind would want to cover works written by Joyce, Yeats or Keats. This sort of general avant-folk category is one that Bates worked in best, regardless of what the world surrounding him would turn to. Mostly, these songs are about warmth and a feeling of comfort. Listen to 1996's 11 minute long "The Cruel Mother". You're almost straining to hear Bates' fragile voice as he whispers and hums along an extremely low-hushed melody. 1982's "Mirrored in Me" sounds quite operatic and would fit perfectly on a grand theatre stage, while 1990's "Later War Cries" is one of these perfectly, romantic [though never dripping with honey] pop tunes. Most of Bates material that is represented here is quite minimal - only an acoustic guitar or a flute or violin added to his voice. Sometimes, it's just his voice as on "Poems Pennyeach" and that is all that is needed. It's that voice that is sincere, drips with nothing but pure bliss and has an oomph of emotive fragility. Though his music may sound remote, you can't really accuse Bates of being cold or removed from reality. Add nothing and take nothing away, this is an essential compilation that presents material that should never be forgotten or taken for granted.
