GIANLUCA BECUZZI & FABIO ORSI
The Stones Know Everything

I have a confession to make. I heard this 2 CD set in backwards order. Starting with the second CD, I got an impression this is simply another drone-music project. This is only partially right. Italian duo made up of sound architects Gianluca Becuzzi [aka Kinetix] and Fabio Orsi creates a world in which the most mundane sounds seem exciting and alive. This is a world where anything and everything is allowed to exist side by side. Officially only three instrument sources are listed inside the CD casing - keyboards, guitars and laptop. The way these are mixed is such that it often sounds there is a full orchestra playing these sounds. Music is so rich in subtle shifts and underpinning imagery, the mind tends to get lost trying to follow a linear path of logic set out. On "The Lights From the Middle of Nowhere" [which takes up the bulk of the second disc in the set], they glide through space galaxies with synths that crackle, guitars that sparkle and computer manipulations that add a further dimension. Although somewhat more gentle, I get a distinct whiff of My Cat is an Alien territory in some of this. The piece varies slightly in pacing and texture. Through time, it twists in on itself and becomes unrecognizable. Don't expect familiar motifs or a intermediary chorus to point your way. This is music where each listener becomes their own guide. If you get lost, don't despair. Best to stay calm and relax before taking in the next CD in the set. Gently caressing but strangely dangerous in its ability to surprise with shifts, the music is highly original and truly addictive. The first disc seems to be somewhat more barren, though it has a higher density of high pitched glitches that accompany the drones. It's the first disc that I find more soothing, if anything, to a point, even ambient. With a list of Italian freak-out drone artists growing ever so long - My Cat is an Alien, Jennifer Gentle - now add this duo to that mix. "The Stones Know Everything" is a surprisingly self-assured, wide-ranging release.
