WILLIAM PARKER & HAMID DRAKE
First Communion & Piercing the Veil
Summer Snow

[Aum Fidelity, www.aumfidelity.com]

Long out of print, Aum Fidelity decided to bring back into circulation the first meeting of bassist William Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake. Rather than a simple reissue, an extra disc of duo's music [totalling 90 minutes of unheard material] was added. Working title of "Piercing the Veil" was "This Is Drum-&-Bass, Volume 1", an appropriate title aptly describing what takes place over the disc's length. As a duo album, this is communion of the highest order. These two speak to each other on wavelengths misunderstood by most of us mere mortals. Original session was recorded back in April 2000, while the bonus materials were oddly enough recorded two days prior to the original album session. More "standard" drum and bass tracks like "Black Cherry" and "Loom Song" are quite outstanding with Parker going down deep on his strings, while Drake establishes a pulsing rhythm that just won't quit. The real excitement of this session was the use of shakuhachi, dumbek and balafon. When Parker picks up the shakuhachi on "Nur Al Anwar" and Drake switches over to the frame drum, their sound becomes immediately comparable to that of the trance-inducing rhythms created by Master Musicians of Joujouka. "Chaung Tzu's Dream" features a subdued section where the slit drum and tabla are used to create an effect of constant, worbly repetition. The more "outside" the two musicians go, the more intensely interesting the music becomes. "First Communion" is far from being throw-away material. In fact, during the extended section, the duo gets a golden opportunity to really shine and broadcast their skills to the world. Part 1 features an intricate frame drum-slit drum head-to-head that is tender but highly emotive. Drake then switches over to his drum set and this in itself creates a shivering effect. While Part 2 features light drabs of shakuhachi whistles that are surrounded by Drake's intensely warm and inviting tabla rhythm, Part 3 features Drake on the drum set, pounding out a steady slab of rhythm to which Parker responds in turn by slapping his bass strings quite ferociously. Clocking in close to a full hour, the third part of "First Communion" is the most "traditional" of all the parts and I find my interest tends to return endlessly to the first two parts. Richly thought out re-issue, one that other labels should take a cue from.
Fast forward five years to September 2005, when the duo's latest recording "Summer Snow" was put down to tape in Brooklyn. The subtlety and trained ear of both men still resounds as clearly as on the previous release. If anything, this stuff is even more relaxed but played with a higher attentiveness. Right off the bat, "Sky" welcomes the listener with a subtle rhythm set out on the frame drum and dumbek. As things progress, Parker moves on to Shakuhachi on "Earth", which is accompanied by a steady rhythm on the frame drum. One of the stand out tracks for me is the nearly ten minute long "Pahos". While Drake gives birth to a pulsating rhythm on the tabla, Parker counter-acts with a lightly strewn melody on the shakuhachi. The twelve minute long "Konte" sees Drake switch to the drum set, while Parker rides a wave of deep, finger slapping rhythms on the bass. Once again, the duo amazes with music that is sharp, full of variety and mostly subtle in delivery. Bravo!!
