ANTHONY BRAXTON & FRED FRITH

WOLF EYES & ANTHONY BRAXTON
Black Vomit

[Victo, www.victo.qc.ca]

Unofficially, 2005 was Anthony Braxton's year at FIMAV. Not only did he perform in Victoriaville with his sextet, he also sat in duo settings with guitarist Fred Frith and the noise outfit Wolf Eyes.
Both long-time supporters of FIMAV, Frith and Braxton have performed at the festival dozens of times. Their records made there maintain their edge so many years after the concerts have been filed into people's memory banks. With that said, their meeting was a highly anticipated one. Frith marks his territory early on, as he holds the sustain on his electric guitar. Braxton responds with wildly imaginative soprano squelches. In many fragments, you hear Frith the rock musician, as he solos and pokes the strings on the guitar. When he reaches "Improvisation No. 3", Frith sounds as if he's getting more intent on letting it all hang out. While Braxton drives the music forward with a variety of squeals and melodic soprano motifs, Frith colours the proceedings with a slew of atypical grasps on the strings. His technique is sometimes very pensive as he maps out his next move. It's Braxton that sounds more decisive on a few of the pieces. Even though he's harsh, his music still resounds with a healthy amount of melody. As he blasts the hell out of his partner, you start to realize, this was another one of these magical moments deep in the heart of Quebec.
The duo with Wolf Eyes was not supposed to happen. Braxton simply jumped on stage and joined the noise trio to make this one of better gigs of 2005's FIMAV. Funny thing is Braxton is never an intrusion to the band, nor does the band take anything away from Braxton's style. Everyone is perfectly themselves. Wolf Eyes stick to their controlled noise portion and let bricks fly as they may, while Braxton's horn is simply embedded as just another element in the game. Every move is allowed, as the music grows in intensity, Braxton is heard competing with harsh electronic sounds and John Olson's sax. It all comes perfectly into full view as the place is lit on fire and bursts into flames. The noise gets so tangible and so perfectly formed; you just want to cry out for joy. Then, when an encore rolls around in the form of "Rationed Rot", the noise twists in on itself, while Braxton adjusts his horn and matches the exact intensity and tone to the tee. Along the lines of Dixon/Taylor/Oxley and Borbetomagus/Voice Crack gigs, this is one more FIMAV show that is surely to go down in history books.
